What have our friends at Big Brothers Big Sisters West Island been up to lately? Weβve got all the latest updates and hope we can inspire you to get involved with your community!
Building a Better Community
This past month the agency received an Environmental Grant from local non-profit Partage Action. On Saturday, June 11th, a few Bigs and Littles gave back to both the community and the environment by planting flowers at a senior’s residence. They also worked on some craft projects creating bookmarks to be paired with second-hand books for all the residents to enjoy. “It was a really special event as it taught our Littles the value of being involved in their community and giving back, as well as the value of these inter-generational opportunities.” Said director Megan Semenchuk.
A New Match
BBBSWI has been trying to cut down their waitlist for boys awaiting male mentors. For several months now the agency has struggled to find mentors for these deserving youngsters. Well this month they were thrilled to set up a new match that is already flourishing! Of course there are still lots of Littles awaiting to be matched with a Big so if you or someone you know is interested in volunteering please reach out online at https://westisland.bigbrothersbigsisters.ca/volunteer/
Ribfest, Back and Better Than Ever
And wrapping things up with another fantastic announcement. Summer means one thing for BBBSWI – RIBFEST! That’s right its back and better than ever! After cancellations and limitations due to Covid-19 the team really stepped it up this year and have put together and incredible event. With all your favourite things like live music, beer garden and of course ribs, this year will also feature a kids zone and newly expanded vendors market. Ribfest is one of, if not the biggest fundraising event for the agency with proceeds from all participants directly benefiting youth mentoring programs. Admission is free but donations upon entry are highly encouraged. FlightHub is proud to be sponsoring for a third year and always look forward to attending such a fun event that truly makes a difference in our community.
Ribfest takes place August 12th to 14th, 11am-9pm at 13665 Pierrefonds Boulevard, Pierrefonds, Quebec.
